AWLA Lists Frenchie, Kills Rome

Frenchie, the cute 3-month-old Rottweiler mix that we cited in a post last weekend, was put on view for adoption yesterday. AWLA did the right thing for her, and we hope she finds a home soon.

AWLA did not do the right thing for Rome, a one-year-old male pitbull and the other dog cited in the weekend post. If Rome had an owner who was looking for him, he and his owner weren’t given much of a chance to reunite — AWLA described Rome in generic terms on their lost-and-found website page and didn’t bother to put his picture up. Then AWLA killed him without even offering him to the two non-breed-specific rescue groups that took the trouble to become its approved dog-transfer partners. And he wasn’t killed for space — AWLA had plenty of empty kennels.

Rome was the very definition of a helpless and friendless dog, and the people entrusted with Arlington County’s animal welfare took away any chance he had to live his life.

Three other dogs listed for adoption disappeared from AWLA’s website yesterday: Joe, Laini, and Spike. Does anyone know what happened to them? Were they adopted? I was visiting cats at the shelter last week and had a chance to meet and greet Spike as he was returning from a dog walk. He was a very friendly and animated young yellow pitbull. If you know what happened to Spike, please send e-mail to awlahawk@yahoo.com — we’d love to contrast Rome’s story with one about Spike’s adoption.
